What is 'Using Privilege'?


When I first heard the idea of "white privilege" I was in Vermont at a Permaculture Design Course filled with white people. The one slightly less white person felt so moved by the tenets of permaculture — earth care, people care, reinvest surplus — that he presented some of his thoughts on the final day of the 10-day course. It blew me away. This blog is not a direct result of that, but it does reflect an understanding that my background — which includes my education, my relationships, my income and my opportunities in life among other things — has given me certain privileges. I can choose how I use those privileges.
